MDPI Open Science Insights: Academic Publishing Essentials—Hosted by Nanyang Technological University, School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 12 February 2025, Singapore


MDPI is thrilled to collaborate with the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Nanyang Technological University to deliver an insightful workshop titled—Academic Publishing Essentials—designed to highlight the core principles of open access publishing.

This hands-on session delves into MDPI's publication process, actionable writing techniques, and research strategies to help participants craft compelling scientific manuscripts. Guided by our experienced Academic Editors, the workshop is tailored to support authors of all backgrounds, equipping them with the essential skills to navigate the publishing journey with confidence.

  • MDPI, Open Access Model, and Journal Introduction

This session provides an introduction to MDPI and the open access publishing model, highlights journals on biological sciences and biomedicine, and offers a concise overview of MDPI's editorial process, including peer review and ethical practices.

  • Identification of Publication Trends and Hot Topics

Authors will gain insights into identifying emerging research trends and hot topics within their fields. The session introduces essential research tools like VosViewer and Bibliometrix, along with practical techniques for leveraging the Web of Science database. Key topics in this session include journal indexing processes, bibliometric concepts, and strategies for making data-driven decisions in research.

  • How to Respond to Peer Reviewers

This session will guide authors on effectively addressing major and minor revision comments from peer reviewers. Participants will learn how to make the necessary adjustments to their manuscripts while ensuring that all feedback is adequately addressed. By mastering this process, authors can improve their chances of successful publication.

Mr. Cao Yan
Vice President
IEEE Nanyang Technological University Student Branch

Mr. Cao Yan is a Ph.D. candidate at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore. He serves as the Vice-Chair of the IEEE Nanyang Technological University Student Branch. His research interests include the optimization and analysis of multi-energy systems and microgrids.

Dr. Colin Wee
Publishing Manager
MDPI Singapore

Dr. Colin Wee joined MDPI in October 2021 as a Publishing Specialist for the Social Sciences portfolio of journals. He holds positions as Publishing Manager for multiple journals, Journal Relations Lead, and a Scientific Review board member.

He has a liberal arts undergraduate education in Psychology and Neuroscience, graduating with honors from Grinnell College, Iowa. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial–Organizational Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research focuses on Vocational Interest and Psychometrics. He has studied in Singapore, the UK, Japan, and the USA.

Mr. Kurtis Jackson
Head of Author Services

Kurtis Jackson first joined MDPI in 2016. He holds a first-class bachelor’s degree in French and Spanish and a master’s degree in Translation Studies from Cardiff University. In 2019, he opened and established MDPI’s office in Manchester, UK. After serving as Office Manager for two years, he became Head of English Editing, contributing to MDPI’s efficient and high-quality service to authors. He is committed to developing MDPI’s Author Services to support authors more fully in the writing and publication of their research.
