It is our pleasure to welcome you to Venereology (ISSN: 2674-0710) [1], a new open access journal by MDPI. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or infections (STIs) spread in humans by means of a variety of biological microorganisms, such as fungi, bacteria, viruses and parasites, which in many cases are already inhabiting our bodies.
More than 1 million STIs are acquired every day, affecting people around the world [2]. The majority of STIs have no symptoms, thus enabling their continued transmission. When present, common symptoms include vaginal or urethral discharge, genital ulcers and lower abdominal pain [3]. The most common and curable STIs are trichomonas, chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis. However, others lack or have limited treatment options, including acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS/HIV), genital herpes simplex virus (HSV), viral hepatitis B and C, human papillomavirus (HPV) and human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) [3,4].
Understanding sexual practices as the main mode of transmission sets the basis for treatment and prevention measures. It is now recognized that some STIs can also be transmitted during pregnancy and childbirth and through infected blood or blood products.
This new cross-disciplinary journal will accept original research articles and reviews on both general research and clinical practices related to STDs. The scope of this journal also extends to the pathophysiology and epidemiology of STDs, and the prevention, diagnosis, and management of STDs, including with cancer and/or dermatological comorbidities.
We would like to introduce Prof. Dr. Jacek C. Szepietowski who accepted our invitation to serve as the Editor-in-Chief of Venereology. The focus of this journal will complement our portfolio of medical and healthcare journals [5]. We hope that you find this journal to be of high scientific interest, and welcome all interested researchers and professionals to contribute to this new journal so that, together, we may advance the development of cures for many of these diseases.
