Cover Story: Androgens and androgen receptors (ARs) play a role in lung cancer (LC). Three different aspects of AR involvement in the two major lung cancer (LC) subtypes, small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) were investigated, including studies on their molecular role, clinical role and pharmacological role. The main findings were as follows: (1) androgens and ARs are expressed in LC cell lines and biopsies and have a role in cell proliferation and related pathways; (2) in clinical studies, there is no clear association between androgens or AR expression and survival outcomes; (3) targeting androgens or ARs using pharmacological means can improve tumor response to therapy.
