Cover Story: Dams and reservoirs have always been of interest to humans, playing a crucial role in social life. The current context of climate emergency and increased pressure from socio-environmental demands require the exploration of opportunities to improve dam safety practices. In this search, the historical review of these practices becomes relevant. Dividing historical periods into homogeneous periods in terms of dam safety paradigms allows us to structure an evolutionary narrative useful for the review of the fundamentals of the two conceptual frameworks applied nowadays. The conclusions of this review in the current context of exponential growth of technologies, such as data generation and processing, artificial intelligence and equivalent tools, open the debate towards new paradigms that provide alternative responses to the current and future demands.
