Following the successful integration of Cardiovascular Medicine into our portfolio [1], we are delighted to welcome another distinguished journal that was previously published by Editores Medicorum Helveticorum (EMH): Swiss Archives of Neurology, Psychiatry and Psychotherapy (SANPP).
The journal has a remarkably long history and tradition, dating back to the First World War. Its development and scientific legacy are well documented in “History of Neurological Contributions in the Swiss Archives of Neurology and Psychiatry” by Philipp Valko, Marco Mumenthaler, and Claudio Bassetti [2], as well as in “One Hundred Years of the Swiss Archives of Neurology and Psychiatry—A Treasure Trove of German-Speaking Neurology” by Jürg Kesselring [3].
Swiss Archives of Neurology and Psychiatry was founded in 1917 by Constantin von Monakow, a pioneer of modern neurology, who served as Editor-in-Chief until his death in 1930. His vision was to create a journal that would strengthen the Swiss scientific community and provide a central forum for Swiss neurologists and psychiatrists. From its inception, the journal played a crucial role in shaping the discipline, publishing seminal work—including that of von Monakow himself—and contributing significantly to the establishment of neurology as a formal medical specialty in Switzerland during the 1930s.
Although firmly rooted in Switzerland, the journal quickly gained international recognition and readership. It became an especially significant outlet for neurologists and psychiatrists in the German-speaking world, as well as for scholars from across Europe.
One of the most notable milestones in the journal’s history was Volume 13, published in 1923, which comprised a special collection of articles written by internationally renowned authors in honor of von Monakow’s 70th birthday.
Over the course of its long history, the journal has undergone several title changes reflecting the evolution of the disciplines it represents. In 1959, the journal was renamed Swiss Archives of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry. During this period, the eminent neurosurgeon Hugo Krayenbühl served as Editor-in-Chief. Over the decades, SANPP has published work by many outstanding scientists, including Nobel laureates Walter Rudolf Hess and Rita Levi-Montalcini.
The journal was renamed Swiss Archives of Neurology and Psychiatry in 1985 and went on to adopt its current title in 2016.
We are honored to become part of such a distinguished tradition. The journal itself also reflects a rich publishing history: originally published by Orell Füssli from its founding until 1992, it subsequently moved to Zürichsee-Verlag, then to J. Bäbler in 1994, and finally to Editores Medicorum Helveticorum (EMH) in 1997. MDPI is proud to be the next publisher of Swiss Archives of Neurology, Psychiatry and Psychotherapy and to contribute to the continuing history of this exceptional journal.
Beginning with Volume 176, SANPP will be published in English in order to further strengthen its international visibility and accessibility. We look forward to building on the achievements of those who came before us and to continuing the journal’s great tradition.
We welcome the Editorial Board Members, authors, and reviewers, and we look forward to working together to advance knowledge in neurology, psychiatry, and psychotherapy.
