Frequency of Exfoliation Syndrome Among Patients Attending an Ophthalmology Outpatient Clinic in the Northeastern Black Sea Coast of Turkey
Highlights
- In a hospital-based surveillance of patients aged ≥40 years (n: 938) attending a regional ophthalmology outpatient clinic, exfoliation syndrome was common, with an overall hospital-based frequency of 20.8%.
- Exfoliation syndrome showed strong age dependence and was associated with glaucoma and hypertension in this care-seeking population.
- Hospital-based exfoliation syndrome frequency data can inform regional service planning for glaucoma surveillance and cataract care, but should not be interpreted as population prevalence.
- Routine slit-lamp screening for exfoliation syndrome in older clinic patients may improve risk stratification for glaucoma surveillance and perioperative cataract management in regional referral centers.
