Cover Story: Anaesthetic mortality in equids is a key area of concern among practitioners. Anaesthesia-associated mortality has not yet been examined in donkeys and donkey–horse hybrids. This study examined 757 donkeys and 68 hybrids that were subjected to general anaesthesia or standing sedation. Data were collected as part of the fourth Confidential Enquiry into Perioperative Equine Fatalities (CEPEF4). Donkey mortality under general anaesthesia shows similar trends to horse mortality, whilst hybrid mortality appears to be higher. Standing sedation mortality was lower in donkeys, and no mortality occurred in the hybrids. Further details regarding general anaesthesia and standing sedation for donkeys and hybrids, such as drug combinations, monitoring, and recovery, are also discussed. This study provides novel insights into anaesthetic mortality in donkeys and hybrids. View this paper
