The Authors have addressed all the reviewer's concerns point by point. The paper is improved in terms of discussion (see the point on the scale effects) and description of the experimental work (see the related section). Some perplexity on the quality of data would persist - but this is reasonable if compared to the complexity of the topic. In conclusion, I recommend to accept this manuscript in present form. The English language requires moderate changes, but they could be tackled at the proofreading stage.
