Boeraș Ioana obtained her bachelors in biology in 2004 from „Babes-Bolyai” University in Cluj-Napoca, masters in cell biology and molecular biotechnology in 2005 from the same university, and PhD in microbiology and immunology in 2012 from the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, SUA. Ioana is an assistant professor in the Faculty of Sciences and researcher in the Applied Ecology Center at „Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu. Ioana was involved in over 10 national and international projects, published a book chapter and 6 scientific articles (virology and hydrobiology). As a professor she is responsible for genetics, cell biology and hydrobiology laboratories while as a researcher she is using both genetics and hydrobiology knowledge to tackle questions in ecology concerning the impact of pharmaceuticals on lotic ecosystems and their microbial communities.
My PhD thesis from the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department of the University of Bucharest, Faculty of Biology, revolved around sturgeons and the investigation of genetic diversity (through sequencing, genotyping and phylogeny analysis) alongside the identification of sex (through histology, immunohistochemistry, qRT-PCR, western blot and data analysis). Alongside my PhD program I worked as a Laboratory Technician at the Applied Ecology Research Center from the Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu, Faculty of Sciences where I have implemented methods for the detection and quantification of persistent organic pollutants and pharmaceuticals through gas chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. During this time I have become proficient in the use of R statistical computing, GraphPad Prism, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator which helped in analyzing, writing and creating wonderful graphs for the research publications I was involved in.
Cristian Coman is an environmental microbiology enthusiast, being involved in microbial diversity, ecology and biotechnology studies. He targets various topics such as the One Health concept in improving environmental and human health, new approaches in tackling the antibiotic resistance phenomenon, molecular microbiology. Some examples regarding his research experience include: i. Assessing microbial diversity in modern carbonate deposits in hot springs that, based on their structure, can be considered modern analogues of ancient stromatolites, important structures in evolutionary biology studies. The same approach was afterwards applied to non-lithified microbial mats from the Western Plain of Romania, investigating microbial ecology drivers in these habitats. ii. The very first investigation of continental, deep subsurface microbial communities, reaching down to approx. three km below the surface. iii. Together with his team, they performed the first complex investigations of antibiotic pollution and antimicrobial resistance in non-clinical environments from Romania, a highly understudied topic in his country. iv. In the ROICE programme, he participated either as logistic coordinator or expedition leader in three Romanian governmental expeditions to Antarctica, with the purpose of performing microbial diversity, ecology and biotechnology investigations in collaboration with different polar research groups.
