The Transformation of Rice Crop Technology in Indonesia: Innovation and Sustainable Food Security

Rice is the most important crop in Indonesia, which is given much higher priority in government policy. This paper studies the transformation of rice crop technology in Indonesia since 1945, it's of great importance to both rice production and government policy making.

However, there are several points needed to be improved as following,

#1. It's suggested to focus on only technology and production. Demand and food security can be deleted or move to the background part to illustrate the significance of this research.

#2. Theoretical introduction. It's suggested to add one part or section to define Rice Technology, including: meaning, scope, measurement, and how it's determined and evolved. Meanwhile, add one flowchart to show the analytical framework.

#3. The 2nd part is on production, and 3rd part is on transformation of tech, but these two parts are independent from each other. It's suggested to change part 4 to "The contribution of tech to rice production", authors can build economic model or just statistical analysis to show the roles of rice technology to production. The forecast using the linear regression is too simple.

#4. For technology, the government policy and technological extension are also very important. Pls add some introduction on policy and extension system.

#5. For academic research, the webpage figure (screenshot) is not necessary, Figure 4 can be deleted.

Response: We have edited the manuscript to better focus on technology and production and improved the background in the introduction.

Response: We have added a flowchart to better show the study’s framework.

Response: The contribution of technology is already discussed in this paper by explaining how technological transformation throughout the years contributed to increasing the rice production

#4. For technology, government policy and technological extension are also very important. Pls add some introduction on policy and extension system.

Response: we have added a new section to explain the government policy and agricultural extension’s role (section 4)

 

#5. For academic research, the webpage figure (screenshot) is not necessary, Figure 4 can be deleted.

Response: we have already deleted the figure mentioned.

The manuscript titled “The Transformation of Rice Crop Technology in Indonesia: Innovation and Sustainable Food Security” has been reviewed. In the written, the authors provide some information about the development history of Indonesia rice planting. I believe the whole story revealed in the manuscript would be interested by potential readers.

 However, some minor deficiencies should be improved.

1) Some abbreviation should be explaned such as B/C ratio (L369), NPV (L368), IPM (L431), PTT (L433), R/C ratio (L321) et al.

2) In table 3, no units were used.

3) Please illustrate crop techniques of Jarwo and Jarwo Super.

4) Please tell the readers how to calculate the R value of Fig1 and Fig2.

5) Please give out meanings  of Basic Scenario and other nouns In Fig3.

 In addition, change explation in L273 to explanation, that in L281 to into, targes in L282 to targets.

The manuscript entitled "The Transformation of Rice Crop Technology in Indonesia: Innovation and Sustainable Food Security" mainly focuses on the rice production technology in Indonesia from 1945 to 2020 and the outlook for 2030. Furthermore, the submitted manuscript focused on the Indonesian transformation of rice technology: improvement of rice varieties, integrated crop management, innovations in agricultural machinery, and the Integrated Cropping Calendar Information System (ICCIS). This review has new angles, new research target that are worthy of further consideration.

 

Minor revision

1 The section introduction is long and is difficult understand and need to be organize in a better way to understand which transformation of rice technology the review covers.

2 There is four figures and three tables in this review. Please organize in a better way to help to the synthetization of the subject.

3 The figure 1, figure 2 and figure 3 are a little ugly. Please improvement the figures.

4 The authors would gain to choose a clear angle to present new advances on transformation of rice technology (for example, adaptation of rice cultivars and rice practices to the different Indonesia ecotypes, or physiology of rice, etc…) to avoid to gather different parts without a clear organization of the ideas and to be too much redondant to other review on this subject.

5 In conclusion, I believe this review gather very interesting facts about transformation of rice technology but need to be greatly improved to reach the interest of the reader and the synthetization goal of a review. In this section, the further work (including breeding, improvement crop management, etc…) should be discussed.

Response: We discuss how the technology change has contributed to Indonesia’s rice production increase throughout the year since its independence. We want to showcase that the technological transformation is a huge factor that helped Indonesia raise rice production and will continue to be the integral part that has to be continuously updated to keep up with the increasing demand.

The authors basically revised the manuscript following the review suggestions. However, the #2 of the review suggestions needs to be improved. My suggestion is to add a flowchart to introduce the analytical structure of this research, and it should be based on the theory of technology. Current flowchart is only a brief illustration of the technology practice, it is not necessary. If authors  can not add the theoretical framework, the current so-called flowchart can be deleted.
