Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This study used a segregating F1 family to evaluate the application effect of MAS on late blight resistance improvement. Through comprehensive phenotype investigation on LB resistance as well as some other yield and agronomical traits, these data strongly supported that MAS is effective in LB resistance improvement and greatly save the workload during early generation. Summarized, this manuscript represents a typical breeding-directed study and would be valuable for potato breeders worldwide.

However, I do not agree all the writing and organization of the manuscript. Though the study was well designed and the conclusion is clear and meaningful, the presentation of the results is tediously long, and the figures and tables are roughly prepared. So, I have several suggestions to improve this manuscript.

1, just simplify the description the results and try to use short sentences.

2, if possible, the figures can be combined together and should be well arranged to make them much comfortable. For example, Fig 1 and 2 can be put together and the scale bar can be added.

  1. there are too much contents in the tables; however, it should provide the most important data in the table, while other expressions can be complemented in the annotations. For example, terms about assessment method can be abbreviated and the date can also be provided in the annotations.
  2. Can the authors discuss among the diverse R genes, which one or combination may have a better application effect in LB resistance improvement?

Author Response

Many thanks for your comment. We have accepted all recommendation and made necessary correction.

Sorry, for can not detect the best combination of Rpi genes nowadays. For such conclusion the more research is needed.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

Review of “Combination Breeding and Marker-Assisted Selection to Develop Late Blight Resistant Potato Cultivars”.

The authors presents a very interesting results related to identify genotypes with high LB re-sistance and assess the accuracy and efficacy of SCAR DNA markers to track Rpi genes as practical breeding tools.

Late blight (Phytophthora infestanse) remains the most devastating disease of potato and, continues to threaten global potato production.

The article in general is well written and the information presented in a logical manner.

Results

Figure 2 describe more precisely, for example row a) segregants with yellow tubers and uncolored eyes; b), and so on…

Table 2 must be described more precisely, for example in the title it must be artificially infected and 4 and 8 days after artificially infected

Line 299 add “a” to nthocyanin

Author Response

Thank you very much for your comment and suggestions. We have made all correction, exept the one, which is for Line 279 "Please mark three groups on the dendrogram".

Sorry, We have not possibilbty to mark groups on the dendrogram. We discribed this groups in the text.
