The wealth of information compiled by Dr. Shahan K. Sarrafian in the first two editions has been expanded and presented in a much improved format by Dr. Armen S. Kelikian. The illustrations are sharper in appearance, the formatting of the legends is improved, and the overall presentation with different colored fonts for chapter headings and sections improves the appearance and makes it easier to locate information.
The book is organized into two sections. The first section contains the descriptive anatomy of the foot and ankle and is organized into chapters starting with developmental anatomy, followed by systemic anatomy (osteology, soft tissue, arthrology, muscles, angiology, and nerves), and ending with chapters on topographical, cross-sectional, and functional anatomy. This sequencing provides an in-depth knowledge of the anatomy starting with the skeletal components and proceeding superficially. These chapters were present in the second edition but they have been expanded to include additional information and numerous illustrations of both normal anatomical structures and variations. The second section of the book contains applied anatomy organized into chapters on arthroscopy, angiosomes, diagnostic imaging, and ultrasound of the foot and ankle. Included in these chapters is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) atlas of sagittal, coronal, and axial sections of the ankle and forefoot. These chapters are new in the third edition and provide an excellent clinical application of the anatomy of the foot and ankle. All chapters are followed by an extensive list of references.
The third edition is an optimal resource for anyone seeking detailed information on the anatomy of the foot and ankle and those caring for patients with foot and ankle problems. The book will serve as an excellent reference for questions regarding the anatomy of the foot and ankle.
