Cover Story: Obesity is considered to be a 20th-century pandemic, and its prevalence correlates with increasing global pollution. In our environment, we can identify chemical compounds that are able to influence the mechanisms responsible for energy homeostasis. These substances are called obesogens, and may contribute to the development of obesity directly by altering the pathways of food intake; influencing adipose tissue differentiation and metabolism; and, indirectly, by shifting the energy balance to favour calorie storage. Where can we find them and how can we avoid them? View this paper.
