Cover Story: Unraveling the mysteries of neural networks, both natural and artificial, is essential for understanding human cognition and improving AI systems. Current information-theoretic methods provide insights into these networks but fail to conclusively identify functional modules. Here, we introduce a novel information-theoretic measure, relay information (IR), capable of pinpointing functional modules in artificial neural networks. Aided by a greedy search algorithm, IR significantly reduces the number of tests needed to identify the most informative neuron sets. Extensive examples showcase IR's ability to recover relevant functional nodes and demonstrate how perturbations affect predicted functionality, offering a breakthrough in understanding the inner workings of neural networks. View this paper
