Cover Story (view full-size image): Gastrointestinal disturbances have frequently been reported in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Digestive symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea or abdominal bloating have been reported to correlate to various maladaptive behaviors in ASD children, such as irritability, social withdrawal or stereotypy. We here provide an overview on the prevalence of the gastrointestinal disorders in ASD, and we discuss the metabolic and microbiome factors underlying the gastrointestinal manifestations in ASD View Paper here.
