Collaborative projects between chemists, physicists and engineers have demonstrated that individual molecules or arrangements of molecules can conduct electrical currents and may retain ‛bits’ of information. Considerable eforts are being invested in developing strategies for the design and preparation of new materials involving organic molecules, and these efforts will be the focus of this special issue.
