Degenerative eye diseases affect millions of people worldwide, and this number is expected to grow each year. Degenerative eye diseases can affect various parts of the eye, including the retina, cornea, iris and macula. Some degenerative changes occur because of aging; others are related to heredity factors. Either way degenerative changes ultimately lead to decrease of vision and interference with activities of daily living. Most of the degenerative diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and Keratoconus (KC) can cause devastating vision problems. Unfortunately the exact cause of such diseases is unknown. Patients suffering from them hope for the development of new treatments and better prognosis tools. Significant scientific progress has been made on a lot of these diseases, however, it is vital to be able to advance these findings and promote new therapeutic treatments. It is clearly a huge challenge and the input and effort of various scientific disciplines is vital.
