Sustainable Irrigation 2010
7 June 2010 to 9 June 2010
Bucharest, Romania

Sustainable Irrigation 2010 is the third conference in this series, following the success of the meetings enjoyed in Bologna (2006) and Alicante (2008).

As the standard of living of a large section of the world’s population continues to increase, the strategic importance of fresh water resources also rises. It is essential to seek ways of achieving the most efficient and equitable use of these resources at the same time as making their use sustainable.

Even in those countries where fresh water is currently easily available, over-exploitation is leading to damaging long lasting environmental effects, such as the lowering of water tables or depletion of river flows. Adding to these effects, the problem of contamination effectively reduces the availability of clean water.

Water is essential for irrigation purposes, but its indiscriminate use can lead not only to shortages, but also to the deterioration of crop yields and soils. It is hence vital to ensure that it is applied as effectively as possible in order to reach sustainability.

This conference seeks to address the different aspects of irrigation, including not only the management of water resources, scientific and technical aspects, but also matters related to policy and economics.

The conference aims to attract researchers in academia and industry as well as professional practitioners and policy makers to review the latest developments in sustainable irrigation from a scientific, technological, political and economic point of view. Its objective is also to discuss how to reach the sustainable management of irrigation resources in the future by applying modern computer simulation methods, advanced and new technologies as well as analyzing different policies and economic forecasting techniques.

3rd International Conference on Quantified Eco-Efficiency Analysis for Sustainability
9 June 2010 to 11 June 2010
Hotel Zuiderduin, Zeeweg 52, NL-1931 VL, Egmond aan Zee, The Netherlands

The Challenge

Increasing affluence and population growth will destroy the environment, will hit the poor, and will hit next generations, unless extreme, unprecedented improvements in eco-efficiency are realised, leading to decoupling of economic growth from environmental impact. De-growth, for the richest, will be an essential ingredient.
The time frames involved start now. Fundamentally new technologies in production and consumption will however require decades for their full scale introduction, and we don’t know them yet. How can we guide the right developments, based on best current knowledge, and how can we create the incentives for this key issue in long term sustainability?

The conference

The conference will set the stage on day one, with keynote speakers from all continents covering targets and strategies. On day two we will look into specific options for eco-efficiency improvements in core domains of sustainable development. On day three we will go into the intricacies of analysis and the schools involved. The day before the conference officially starts, there will be the possibility to take part in one of the available courses.

Your role

Present your challenging research. Send in an abstract now and join the conference, to learn, and to contribute to the discussions on our future. Registration will become available soon.

Publication

Authors of a selection of presentations will be invited to submit a full paper for a special section on eco-efficiency in the Journal of Industrial Ecology, following usual review procedures.

Sociology on the move

The International Sociological Association hosts 55 different Research Committees. Research Committee 24, 'Environment and Society', will be holding 18 separate sessions at the ISA World Congress, covering many different dimensions of sustainability, risk, and social-natural relations.

“Sociology on the move” means that our discipline contributes to an understanding of our world by defining new objects of research, devising new approaches and reevaluating its rich heritage. It implies a new openness with regard to other disciplines and to normative questions. The International Sociological Association offers an enormous variety of perspectives – in terms of cultures, gender and generation. They all contribute to the vitality of our discipline.
